John Robert Marsden Lawyer, civil libertarian 1942-2006 JOHN ROBERT MARSDEN, who has died aged 64, was a direct descendant of the firebrand parson the Reverend Samuel Marsden and was as complex and controversial a character as his famous ancestor. He stood for so much - civil liberties, freedom from discrimination, access to justice - but that vast amount of good work was almost totally overshadowed in his last 15 years by questions about his sexuality.
